The Minnesota Vikings have faced a challenging offseason marked by several unfortunate events. Over the past five weeks, the team has encountered numerous setbacks, ranging from tragic incidents to sheer misfortune.
The troubles began in early July when rookie cornerback Khyree Jackson, just 24 years old, tragically lost his life in a car accident. Shortly after, their promising second-year wide receiver, Jordan Addison, was arrested for driving under the influence, adding to the team’s woes.
As training camp commenced, the team suffered further blows. Cornerback Mekhi Blackmon tore his ACL during the first practice, and the very next day, Shaquill Griffin also sustained an injury.
The challenges continued when, on August 13, it was reported that rookie first-round pick J.J. McCarthy had torn the meniscus in his right knee and would require surgery. This injury is part of a concerning trend for the Vikings, as their quarterbacks have been plagued by injuries for nearly a decade. In 2016, Teddy Bridgewater’s severe knee injury drastically changed his career path. The following year, Sam Bradford, a former #1 overall pick, started strong with a 2-0 record before a season-ending injury. More recently, in 2023, Kirk Cousins tore his Achilles during what was perhaps his best season.
As the Vikings prepare for their third season under head coach Kevin O’Connell, they will begin their 2024 campaign on September 8 with an away game against the New York Giants. Although McCarthy wasn’t slated to be the starting quarterback—Sam Darnold was expected to fill that role—his injury will undoubtedly slow the development that fans were eager to witness this year.
Amidst these difficulties, there has been some positive news for the team. In June, the Vikings secured a key player by signing star wide receiver Justin Jefferson to a four-year, $140 million contract extension.
